Let the Bush administration debate what the definition of "is" is, for once.

Although this came from the Drudge Report, it's just a transcript from CNBC's 'Capital Report':

BORGER: Well, let's get to Mohammad Atta for a minute, because you mentioned him as well. You have said in the past that it was, quote, "pretty well confirmed."

Vice Pres. CHENEY: No, I never said that.

Vice Pres. CHENEY: Never said that.

BORGER: I think that is...

Vice Pres. CHENEY: Absolutely not. What I said was the Czech intelligence service reported after 9/11 that Atta had been in Prague on April 9th of 2001, where he allegedly met with an Iraqi intelligence official. We have never been able to confirm that nor have we been able to knock it down.

And then from the Washington Post from a Meet the Press episode (I think that's the one Russert is on):

RUSSERT: Let me turn to Iraq. When you were last on this program, September 16, five days after the attack on our country, I asked you whether there was any evidence that Iraq was involved in the attack and you said no.

Since that time, a couple of articles have appeared which I want to get you to react to. The first: The Czech interior minister said today that an Iraqi intelligence officer met with Mohammed Atta, one of the ringleaders of the September 11 terrorists attacks on the United States, just five months before the synchronized hijackings and mass killings were carried out.

And this from James Woolsey, former CIA director: ``We know that at Salman Pak, in the southern edge of Baghdad, five different eye witnesses--three Iraqi defectors and two American U.N. inspectors--have said, and now there are aerial photographs to show it, a Boeing 707 that was used for training of hijackers, including non-Iraqi hijackers, trained very secretly to take over airplanes with knives.''

And we have photographs. As you can see that little white speck, and there it is. The plane on the ground in Iraq used to train non-Iraqi hijackers.

Do you still believe there is no evidence that Iraq was involved in September 11?

CHENEY: Well, what we now have that's developed since you and I last talked, Tim, of course, was that report that's been pretty well confirmed, that he did go to Prague and he did meet with a senior official of the Iraqi intelligence service in Czechoslovakia last April, several months before the attack.

If Cheney had forgotten, or was unsure if he said that, wouldn't he have just said, "I don't recall ever saying that" to be safer.  Especially after Ronald Reagan's Iran/Contra problems, it seems to be pretty clear that you have to be careful when dealing in absolutes as a politician.  Instead, he said that, with the knowledge that America has a very short term memory.  Fortunately, some of us are asinine enough to look up these types of claims and prove him to be lying.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

From CNN: "Cheney blasts media on al Qaeda-Iraq link"

What these guys don't get is that the election is far enough away that these bald-faced lies will be shown to be exactly what they are.  If the election were held next week, then this strategery might pay off.

The hole they are digging is getting deeper.  This makes me happy.

Kerry has to sit back and let them dig it, IMO.

I need to find those sound clips for myself.

Reading the transcript last night, I wondered if Cheney was lying when he said "never" in reference to the Czech report.  Thanks for the confirmation.

How is Bush going to clean this latest Cheney mess up?

    •  clean up? (none)
No, they'll just spin and lie and pretend it didn't happen and hope 50% +/- a few hundred thousand voters are too dumb to notice.
